Bucks best open secret

I’ve always found Buckinghamshire to be distinctly lacking in decent places to stay. Danesfield House however might have just changed that. Its located between the very gorgeous Marlow and the equally lovely Henley-on-Thames, just thirty minutes drive from London (on a good day you could be at Heathrow in less than 45 minutes) but surrounded by landscaped gardens replete with water features and a croquet lawn. All distinctly British, and an incredibly relaxing vibe.

Amazing value to be had

There are lots of wow factor features here: the sweeping driveway, the grand old hall, the orangery... it all feels five star but is actually four. Not that this matters; for as little as £165 per person you could stay the night, enjoy a three course meal, spa access and a spa treatment - which I think is amazing value for money.

A TV...rising up from our bed!

No two rooms are the same at Danesfield. At last count there were 79 rooms and suites – some very ‘groovy grand’ with four-poster beds, original features and a country house feel. Others are more contemporary. Ordinarily I enjoy the former but was mightily impressed with our stable courtyard room. Equipped as it was with the latest high-tech mood lighting (slight moan: I would have liked to have been shown how this actually works – though it was kind of fun working it out for ourselves), bathing was an experience in itself (and I really appreciated the complimentary Aromatherapy Associates products; I love that brand) but bedtime was best of all – with 24 hour room service and an in-bed hydraulic TV. I had no idea how much fun it would be engaging my inner WAG.

Japanese whisky

The only slight disappointment was the food. For all the grandeur of the dining room, the menu both looked and felt a bit gastro pub (where did Adam Simmonds go?) That said, we loved having a Scotch in the grand hall and were mightily impressed to see the new Japanese 'super whiskies' being featured.

The spa and wellness centre is lovely – with pool, jacuzzi, steam room and gym. And as I understand it Danesfield is hugely popular with the afternoon tea crowd (it definitely has some great views of the Thames and beyond).

George Clooney was here!

I’d combine it with a trip to Tom Kerridge’s Hand and Flowers (literally a few moments drive away) and a little mooch around Marlow’s old town (bring your wallet, you’ll need it).

And remember, if Danesfield House is good enough for George Clooney...
